The aftermath of cheating is emotionally intense for both victims and perpetrators. Feelings like anger, betrayal, insecurity, rage, shame, guilt, jealousy, and profound sadness are common.
Victims often experience depressive symptoms after discovering an affair. Studies show that women facing marital threats or partner cheating are more likely to have major depressive episodes. Jealousy is a prevalent emotion linked to spousal infidelity, often accompanied by anger, insecurity, rejection, fear, betrayal, and more, sometimes leading to PTSD. The intensity of these emotions can even lead to aggressive behavior and, in extreme cases, homicide.
Future research could explore coping mechanisms for these intense emotions, helping betrayed individuals navigate and control negative feelings. Understanding and addressing the emotional aftermath of cheating is vital for effective support and interventions in the complex landscape of betrayed trust in romantic relationships.
